We all could use a bit of perspective.

Adventure always seems to follow me around. It shows up in different forms — a broken toe, a burglar breaking in, an uzi pointed at me, a capsized kayak, a prison cell, an underwater connection, a lifetime friendship. Things happen to me all the time, I wish for a normal life sometimes. But who’s to say what’s ‘normal’?

In my life I’ve had my fair share of highs and lows, and I have fallen down so many times that I have stopped counting. I may be accident-prone, but I count myself lucky to have met an innumerable number of interesting people in my journey who remind me that we are but a speck in this universe.

These are a few of the many people who have inspired me. Then there are those who have saved my life on one occasion.

Unassuming.
Self-effacing.
Human being.

Photographer & Teacher

Richard S.

When I met Richard the first time, he wasn’t a such a skilled diver. Using split fins and being an air hog… But he has a BIG heart.

Today he’s an excellent diver and a photographer with years of experience in lighting. He’s the most dedicated underwater photography teacher I have ever met.

My brother from another mother as he likes to say.

Ed Stetson

We first dove together 15+ years ago, in the Sea of Cortez. Then it has been Guadalupe, Socorro and Malpelo.

He’s an excellent diver who puts safety before everything else, and one of the few whom I let help me in my work. I have also learned a lot from him.

Ed is a man of few words, but he’s a very attentive and caring person; underwater and on land.

I am so grateful to have him as a friend.

Husband and Wife

Tomas and Karin

I met Tomas in forestry school. We both liked to hunt, so we hung out often and made traps together.

Years later Tomas got married to Karin. They had a foster daughter whom they eventually adopted.

Tomas and Karin are so full of love that they are able to keep the bitterness away despite their struggles in life. I wish I could be more like them.

Mother & Son

What they had, they happily shared. What they possessed, they willingly gave away. They left me humbled.

More than his land, his wealth lies in his health and outlook in life. The world could use more people like him.
